My daughter's room recently became home to a batch of fruit flies. No matter what I tried I could not rid her room of these pesky insects.
Until I tried this:
•Put a little cider vinegar in a small bowl or jar, along with a piece of fruit (I used an apple core but others have used banana peels with the same success)
•Cover it tightly with a piece of plastic (I used an old bread wrapper) and poke a few small holes in the plastic with a toothpick.
The flies will be attracted to the smell…

I have tried very hard to reduce the amount of plastic that my family uses, specifically the amount of plastic bags we use.
We pack lunches in reusable containers, we save and reuse glass jars as storage containers, we shop with reusable bags (including reusable produce bags), when possible we wrap items in aluminum foil, and we save and reuse plastic bags that items (such as grapes) come in.
As much as we have reduced our plastic bag consumption we have not eliminated it all together.
This is…

TerraCycle one of my favorite companies! I think that it is ingenious how they keep millions of non-recyclable items out of landfills by turning them into usable items; from cookie wrapper to shower curtain, from drink pouch to backpack, from breakfast bar wrapper to bag.

I did.
I am one of those people that likes to know why.
Why are plastic bags made for the environment? Why should we use reusable bottles? Why are phosphates bad for the water systems? Why are front-loading washers and dryers "green"?
Who do I turn to when I want to know why?
Why…

I think it is
wonderful the number of recycling programs that are popping up, from tennis shoes to yogurt containers, from cell phones and yoga mats to breakfast bar wrappers and packing peanuts, if you have something to discard chances are you can find a place, other than the landfill, to send it.
Do you have some old pots and pans that you don’t fill comfortable donating to Good-Will or using for camping?
Might I suggest sending them to…

When you start talking green cleaning these 3 little words come up all the time:
Vinegar, Baking Soda, and Lemons.
When I was younger I remember my grandmother placing caps of vinegar around the house
(specifically behind pictures so they would not be seen). She told me that the vinegar soaked up odors
(I didn’t believe her).
I also remember my grandmother adding vinegar to the water when she washed drapes. She said that it not only removed smells but it also whitened the d…

Those wise people who set up the displays at checkout counters must know this because they cleverly and clearly display gum
(and candy) at the checkout counters where my kiddos can see them and beg for them. The end of a shopping trip usually means the en…

The #1 complaint that I hear concerning organic food is the price.
I have to agree, organic natural products tend to be more expensive
(hopefully that won’t always be the case).
The most common response to this problem seems to be, “If you can’t buy all organic, pick the most important items.”
This is good advice and I would definitely include dairy products to the list of must buy organic products.
Why do I say that?
Let’s look at organic milk for instance.…

I recently received an e-mail from a small general store owner who is looking for some ideas on how to provide better alternatives to water bottles for her customers. I have a few ideas of my own but I know that brainstorming is a great way to come up with ideas so I thought that I would ask all of you to help too. Please read the following letter (for the complete details) and leave us a comment with your suggestion/ideas. The more suggestions the better!
