Over the weekend I had my parents & their friends over to say goodbye to our host child from Ireland (she 13, readily embraced our efforts to live a less toxic life, and went home with my copy of The Hundred Year Lie) The "friend" of my parents ma...
Hi Shauna, Shaklee's NatureBright is similar to bleaching without the chemicals. http://www.shaklee.net/greenbaby-nyc/product/00305 It's taken some of my grayest whites and restored it to a beautiful bright white. That with the laundry detergent i...
The active ingredient in Green Irene's bleach alternative and scouring powder is sodium percarbonate. This is an oxidizing agent that whitens and brightens surfaces and clothing. As far as ingestion concerns, it's comparable to baking soda. The le...
Does anybody know what Oxyclean is? As far as safe ingredients? The jar at the store said something about wearing gloves? Which made me think that was a bad idea but my husband thought it was a natural product. It would be nice to have a safe/nont...
There are many different types of filters so basically you need to know what chemicals you want filtered. If it is fluoride, for example, you'd want to look for a distiller. Distillers boil water into steam, then condense it back into water in a separate chamber, leaving behind particles and total dissolved solids. Since water is heated, distillers kill microbes. They eliminate many other pollutants including trivalent arsenic, fluoride, lead and mercury , but not volatile organic chemicals and chlorine, which are usually removed by an accompanying carbon filter. Upfront costs for distillers are steep, between $200 and $1500. They also use considerable amounts of energy: It takes one kilowatt-hour to produce one liter of distilled water. Because the average person uses 100 gallons of water per day, a whole-house distiller can increase daily home energy use by 378 kWh. If heavy metals are a problem, consider a counter top distiller for your drinking water only. Distilled water contains less dissolved oxygen, and many find that the water tastes flat.
I hope this helps. If you have any other questions about filters, feel free to ask. If you know what chemicals you need to filter I can tell you what type to look for.
Thanks for contacting me. I started a moms group basically on my own, I had friends that were to busy to be involved so I found raisingthem.com it is a great parenting network for all kinds of parenting. You might want to start there.
It can get quite hectic at times running a group because well woman will be woman, need I say more.
However it has added a whole new dimension to my life and parenting, so I say go for it. Put a group up and see if you get any interest.
Let me know if you have any other questions, I will be happy to help.

Trying to learn the truth about living green! Finding alot of confusing messages, Focused on my family first, work second! So excited to learn more and live greener & simpler, can't wait to detox the last 35 years and live smarter!
What does it mean to be a green and clean mom to you?
Providing the very best, wholesome life for my family. Living by example, teaching my kids a more basic lifestyle, less time at work, more time with family. Buying second hand, trying to buy more natural products!
How many children and what are their ages?
13 year old and 9 month old.
What green issues do you hope to learn about through this forum?
First on my agenda is safe baby products and toys. I'm trying to slowly intergrate other green methods but want a slow & steady approach as to learn as much as possible and not shock the family into rebellion! RIDDING MY HOUSE OF PLASTIC! Then onto the next most likely organic clothing, beauty products, health products, etc. I would love to learn to sew, make my own laundry detergent, etc. I'm very passionate (nearly obsessed with this) I want to know of companies I can trust, and need not cross reference and then be disappointed, ingredients I understand, etc. Toy companies especially, as thats my first task! Would also love to meet other like minded voices of reason! As my small community thinks I'm a bit of an oddball for cloth diapering, being a vegetarian, etc.
I would like to learn more about the Mommy Go Green Blog Tours where I can feature and review green products on my blog.
