I have to tell you. My son is 20, and has since left the nest. I have his legos- and wanted to yardsale/ebay them for my daughter to inhabit his room. But my husband was agast at that idea! I found legos I had no idea we had-- a FULL clothing draw...

Great post! I like that it touched on many different aspects. When we go through drive-thru I ask them not to put the items in a bag and not to give us napkins. We usually have something in our cars to wipe our hands with if we have to but most of...

We have really cut back on going out to eat, so that helps. But we ALWAYS have leftovers when we do and I need to get better about throwing something in the diaper bag to put them in!

Oh I love this post! I am definitely new to the "Green" thing but I am an "All or Nothing" kind of girl! And I'm down to about 4 plastic items (jumperoo, saucer, highchair tray, carrier/car seat) for my baby and that's not easy to do. Naturally we...

OK, at the risk of being totally awful-- I've had that too-- "is this it" comment with the (stupid) goodie bags.. and from the kid/mother whose gift was from the dollar store... are you kidding me? I'm feeding your kid, entertaining your kid, baby...

Green Meeme,
I just posted this in the "Toxins in my Dish Detergent". You asked that I let you know when Meyer's responded to my email:

Well, I received an email today from Myers and here's what they said:

Greetings Kirstin,

Thank you for your interest in Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and for taking the time to e-mail us. Our aromatherapeutic fragrances are a proprietary combination of natural essential oils and synthetic fragrance ingredients formulated in compliance with IFRA / RIFM’s (International Fragrance Association and Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) guidelines for safety. Natural essential oils can be rather prone to instability with regard to their properties. Seasonal weather variation can affect the fragrance of the essential oils, as well as their color, which can impact the overall color and scent of any products in which they are used. Because of this instability, we choose to include safe synthetic fragrance ingredients to insure consistency, performance, and stability of our products through their shelf life.

With regard to your inquiry about preservatives, I can tell you that all of our cleaning products, including our Dish Soap, currently contain a preservative system called Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone. These preservatives are highly effective against bacteria and molds at very low levels. Our preservatives are used in our products at a typical level of 0.05%. I hope this information is helpful. If you have any further questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you.

With Clean and Kind Regards,

Jennifer Martinez

I looked up both Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone "can be used in combination with alcohols and other long-chain organics in compounds such as methylchloroisothiazolinone ethylparaben benzalkonium chloride or methylchloroisothiazolinone 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol benzalkonium chloride." I see that word "paraben", something I've learned we should stay away from.

One study showed Methylisothiazolinone to be a neurotoxic to rat brain cells. It is unclear at this point what the final ruling is on it.

I never thought this post would go as long as it has! Team work is getting us to learn new things and help each other out.

Thank you everyone for your attention to this post.

Need washing machine advice

I've been telling hubby for the past couple years that the washing machine is way over due to be replaced. Telling him that soon it's going to go to little washing machine heaven... and we'll need to be getting a new one...
I wouldn't get a new one, just because it was old- mostly for the cost of it, and I didn't want to get rid of a perfectly good washer, even if it was older, and not energy star compliant.

But, dh needed to do his laundry this weekend (I do mine and the family's and he does h… Continue

What do you say to something like that?

I was chatting with some friends the other night-- they had been drinking a bit when I got there, so I think they were pretty loose lipped...
Well, they were telling me this and that, and I couldn't help but offer some green input-- and pretty much what i got back was this:
"I am not going to be Here in 40 years; I don't care what impact I have because I won't be around to see it."
This was reitterated to me several times in several forms-- but the message was clear: I'm not changing what I do,… Continue

In the Veggie Garden

Something is growing in my garden-- well, plenty is growing...
I have to say- I've got high hopes- this is one of the few years that my tomatoes have towered over the cages - before they've produced fruit, AND did not die off in the recent drought month we had here. (admittedly, i was lax in watering them). And, the peppers aren't doing that well- producing fruit, but they are so tiny because the tomatoes are HUGE and are starting to shade them!

This is also the very first year I've used raised… Continue

Green Cat Litter

Hi, green friends

I'm a life-long cat owner, and semi-recently i've been researching ways to green my felines' lives.
I'll save organic pet foods for another blog. For now- cat litter.
I've been researching 'green' cat litters. I do have a cat that goes out, and I have a cat that won't go out. So I have to have litter, or teach them to use the potty-- and since the kitty who is afraid of outside is 17+ years old, I'm thinking he's not going to be a willing learner of the toilet. Anyway-- we hav… Continue

Well, friends... I don't remember much about the oil crisis in the 70s, but I am here to tell you today that we are in an oil crisis.
Last night there was a board of ed/town council meeting. It is budget time, and we are trying to find out what is going to happen. The board of ed has asked for a 6.89% increase in the budget-- of course that is inflated, you know... offer high, bid low.. blah blah... so the schools could most likely get by on 5%. However, the town council only wants to give a fla… Continue
