Refuse to walk out of the stores with the extra packaging when not necessary.

For example,

I go in to the grocery store and find the broccoli I want to purchase is on a foam tray and wrapped in plastic. I don't want to take that home with me so I remove it right there.

Ask for paper bags when you are purchasing loose buns and bread

Don't throw your loose fruit and vegetables in to a plastic bag..just put them in the grocery cart

My favourite was the day I purchased 5 vacuums and asked the sales rep to remove them from the boxes and plastic. He looked at me as if I was nuts but I just explained that I cannot recycle the styrofoam or plastic so I did not want to take it with me. His reply was that they would just throw it in the garbage too and might I add he was quite snotty about it. I just told him that is perfect because they have to pay by the bin and if more people did what I was doing their costs for garbage disposal will make them hold the manufacturere accountable for providing recycleable packaging.

Wow! Good for you. I'm going to have to remember that one. I know this Christmas we gave our baby gifts from garage sales and ebay, it was so nice not having spent the entire morning with wire clippers and cuts from hard plastic. I never thought of refusing the packaging!! Great Tip.
