Green and Clean Mom

Green and Clean Mom

I homeschool two of my three kids (littlest is a baby) and I was wondering if anyone had run across a good way to teach children about becoming green. Any help would be appreciated :-)

Best things I've done:
Monkey see=monkey do
Talk about it all the time. When you do something that you want them to recognize as "green", tell them what you're doing differently than the "ungreen" of the world and why.

We homeschooled for several years, and most of our lessons were Earth-centered. One of the funnest things we did was make our own paper. We went outside and picked flowers, we picked up a fallen leaf here and there, then we hit the recycling bin for scraps of paper. We ended up writing letters to friends and family on our "Spring" paper, and we also made envelopes with it. Adding the flowers (and some store bought lavender) and leaves really makes is beautiful, and it smells pretty, too! Once they see it as fun, the rest is easy!

Have you heard of Barefoot Books? We have a book called Whole World which shares the eco-friendly message and it also includes eco-tips on how to live green and a catchy singalong CD, sung by Fred Penner.

We also have a book coming out mid-October called Whole World FUN Eco-activities. It includes an eco-quiz, word search, recycling game, puzzles and more!

Check it out here http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/productone.php?pid=2295.

Hi, Jennifer,

eeweek is great!

Check out the I Count for myEARTH website. This program launched at my son's school and it's all about being an "EarthMender". If you're interested, I can forward you the materials that can get you started (they're free).

Happy Holidays!

Here are some resources. HTH's. I also think that involving the children by showing them and doing activities with them will help too. Making up games is a great too. I always get so happy when my four year old knows that something should be recycled! It doesn't take much for them to catch on and they really like it!

I like The Homeschooler's Guide to the Galaxy - it's a blog by a mom with a biology background dedicated to homeschooling with an eco-focus.

Hello! I have a 4 and 6 year old and struggled with the same thing. I couldn't find a good children's book to introduce and teach the topic, so I wrote one. It can be found at www.ethangoesgreen.org. We are really excited about it and are scheduling book readings. Each reading I do I love to see the kids are really interested and love hearing ways they can "be green"!

Another great resource is The New 50 Simple Things Kids can do to Save the Earth. It is a great book!

I love all these resources ladies! I might have to get the Fred Penner CD. I think music is a great way to get good messages stuck in a little one's head. :)
